About This Shoot

This house was shot in a single day with a walk through one week in advance in order to prepare. A walk through if possible makes a world of difference, it gives the photographer the chance to not only to isolate what needs to be photographed and how but also grants you time to create a vision for your approach. Personally I like to create a mental map, thinking in pictures of what I will shoot when, followed by what I want to try and come away with from a particular shot. For me it is nothing more than dreaming up a 'look', what it may look like and working through in my mind of how I will achieve it. The lighting approach decide on may not necessarily work once on location but at least it gives you a foundation to start from, you'll find out pretty soon if it's going to come together or not as the light you add starts responding to the scene.

This house was very forgiving, nice clean lines, no clutter, big bright windows, high ceilings, south facing, what more could you ask for when shooting in New England? (in this part of the world it's generally the opposite). Working with such a photogenic structure allowed me to glide through it, it had many more bedrooms and passages etc, but unless you are dealing with something exceptional, a bedroom is more often than not some version of 4 walls and a window, so for me, they are last on my list if at all.
